November/December 2020:

Sharkproject attends the ICCAT Commission meeting as an observer and reiterates its position in several statements.

November 2011

Sharkproject together with Pro Wildlife and Humane Society International organized a webinar on the protection of the Mako shark by the EU. Thanks to the support of EU Parliamentarian Francesco Guerreiro, key decision makers from the Commission and the EU Parliament also participated.

July 2021

Sharkproject participates in the meeting of the relevant committee (Panel 4) at ICCAT and again calls on all delegations to finally support Canada's proposal and thus allow at least a 70% probability of stock rebuilding in the North Atlantic by 2070.

September 2021

Sharkproject and Pro Wildlife are writing jointly to EU Vice President Frans Timmermans urging him not to leave the decision for the fate of the Mako to fisheries, as this is a species conservation issue that concerns the EU Biodiversity Strategy.

November 2021

Sharkproject and Pro Wildlife publish joint press release: EU violates international fisheries law. They rely on a legal opinion of lawyers from the Universities of Hamburg, Leeds and Oxford. In the opinion, the lawyers conclude that the EU's position violates the precautionary principle of the UN Fish Stocks Agreement at UNCLOS.

November 2021

At the November meeting of ICCAT 2021, together with other conservation NGOs, the first comprehensive protection succeeds with an absolute landing ban for the North Atlantic, initially limited to two years, and a subsequent limitation of the total mortality of mako by fishing to a maximum of 250 tons per year. Any landing of small quantities by member states, provided that total mortality remains below 250 metric tons.

Sharkproject participates in the 23rd Special Session of ICCAT in Lisbon
